Alpin Arda Bağcık's first solo exhibition Ambivalans at Galeri Zilberman uses a technique with a high degree of realism (oil paint over charcoal on canvas) to question the role of the media as a disseminator of objective, unambiguous information or events. By recreating iconic images from events such as the US moon landings or celebrations at the end of World War II, the artist poses a problem with each stroke of his brush - if these news images can be thus recreated, in what way can the camera be trusted? We are cast into doubt about the nature of our memories and our knowledge of unseen but accepted events, leaving a sense of disturbed reality.
